Show off your photography skills!

There is just under a month left to enter a ground-breaking photography competition to get people thinking about ageing in a more positive way.

Age Concern, York Cares, York CVS, York Older People's Assembly, York Racial Equality Network, and other key charity and voluntary groups are supporting the competition, along with the University of York, York Press and the council, to help change attitudes towards ageing and promote a positive attitude towards older people.

The competition - 'Full of Life' - is asking residents of any age to send in photos of people aged 50 and over doing something they love in York - whether working, playing, volunteering, or socialising with friends and family. The aim of the competition is to generate a bank of photographs that can be used to show older people in a more positive light as well as highlighting the wide range of opportunities there are in the city for older people.
Along with the rest of the UK, York's population is ageing. By 2029, the number of people aged 55 and over in York will have increased by 33 per cent, and people over 85 by an incredible 83 per cent.

The best images will be used in publications and publicity material produced by the council and its competition partners to present a new and inspiring view of ageing and the huge contribution that older people make to the life of the city.
Submissions will be judged within five categories:
  • Taken by photographers of Primary School age
  • Taken by photographers of Secondary School/Further education age
  • Taken by photographers aged19 years +
  • Taken by photographers aged 50 years +
  • Taken by professional photographers

Winners will be invited to a special reception and exhibition in June. Submissions must be in by 23 May 2011. More information about the competition, prizes, and how to enter are at: https://sites.google.com/site/fulloflifeyork/

Take a Chance with Freya North

Tue 24 May at Explore York Library Learning Centre 7pm to 8.15pm

Freya North makes a welcome return to York to talk about Chances, her stunning new summer bestseller.

Vita's gift shop would do better if she ran it as a business, not as somewhere to daydream. But she's not one to tell herself off – she leaves that to Tim, her ex, who still co-owns the shop. He cheated on Vita and broke her heart. Could she ever give him another chance? Oliver, an experienced and successful tree surgeon, runs his home as calmly as his business. However, his heart is still with the mother of his child, even though it's been three years now. He won't take a chance on love again. Then a pear tree brings Oliver to Vita – and as spring turns into summer they are given choices and chances. Will they grab them – or walk away?

We’ll be celebrating the first anniversary of our reopening as Explore York Library Learning Centre with a glass of wine and cake for our visitors this evening.

Tickets £5.00 (YorkCard) and £6.50 from Explore York, 01904 552815 exploreyork@york.gov.uk

Pole exercises... but not what you think!

Nordic Walking is an enhancement of ordinary walking – it makes something we can all do…. twice as effective!  Nordic Walking uses poles to in order to add two major benefits to walking
·   The use of poles means the upper body muscles are used as well as the legs
·   The poles help to propel the walker along – this means he/she works harder than usual yet the support given by the poles makes it feel easier!
Nordic walking is suitable for most fitness levels and abilities. Suitable from 18 yrs and upwards.
Courses take place at West Bank Park, Rowntree Park and Hull Road Park at various times and dates throughout May, June and July and cost £20  For further information on times see the PDF on righthand side of this page www.york.gov.uk/leisure/walking/health/
