Beginners photography course

Well, why not join me on a beginners photography course to get to grips on camera control, basic photography terms and of course what makes a good photo! There will also be opportunities for you to progress your photography skills and learn some tips and tricks along the way. The course will take part on Friday afternoons for the duration of four weeks (25 Jan to 15 Feb), at a cost of £10.

I will be willing to put on extra lessons after this four week period for anyone who may be interested in furthering their skills! There’s no age limit however, due to the nature of photography I would recommend this course for adults and older children as there are elements of theory work involved.  I have tried to include a mixture of practical and theory to each session.

If this course sounds appealing to you then please don’t hesitate to book your place with me! Please contact Michael Rothwell by email: michael.rothwell@york.gov.uk By phone: 07951 497205

Behind the scenes at the Archives

RESIDENTS FESTIVAL – City Archives tours CANCELLED

Regretfully we have had to cancel the Behind the Scenes tours of the City Archives planned for Saturday 26th January because of staff illness.

We are looking to re-schedule these tours to take place in the February half-term holiday next month, and will publicise the new date on the Archives pages on the Council website www.york.gov.uk

We are very sorry to have let down everybody who has already booked on these tours and we hope that they will be able to come along when we re-arrange them in February.

Moving on from 1212

University of York Senior Lecturer and Medieval historian, Dr. Sarah Rees-Jones takes us back 100 years after 1212 when York was briefly the capital of England during Scotland's Wars of Independence. This lecture will explore the impact of the wars on the city.

Venue: Explore York Library Learning Centre, Sat 26 Jan, 2pm to 3pm

To book a free place, please contact Explore York on 01904 552828 or exploreyork@york.gov.uk

Get stuck in!

Monday 14th January, 1pm to 3pm

We will be working to uncover some of the remains of the old airfield.  The heavy work was completed last year but since then some of the plants have regrown and leaves have fallen on the remains.  We would like to clear this back so they don’t disappear into the undergrowth again.

Monday 28th January, 1pm to 3pm

This task is to check the condition of the nest boxes in West Bank Park and to repair those that can be repaired.  We will also be able to make some new ones and install them in time for nesting season.

If you would like to come along to either of these sessions please contact Jenny Cairns on 07833 436832 or jennifer.cairns@york.gov.uk so we have enough equipment for everyone.

A sneak preview

Residents will be able to see inside the newly refurbished and extended West Offices building that will become the new Customer Centre and offices for the council, prior to it opening in March 2013.

Seaside stride

Wed 7 Nov, 11.15am

Our trained walk leaders will take you for a lovely stroll around Peasholm Park. The walk will take around 2 hrs, and includes a break to eat your packed lunch or even sample the local fish and chips.

Peasholm Park has been designed within a natural glen with a stream running through it which culminates in the lake at the bottom, the perfect place to walk or sit and enjoy the natural features all around. The oriental theme can be seen in the design of bridges and the layout of many areas of the park. There are lots of rare and unusual trees and flowers, both naturally wild and deliberately planted. Wild geese, swans and ducks swim around on the lake and squirrels are seen every day within the woodlands. As time has gone on and some of the original trees have died, parts of their stumps have been specially carved into figures. Look out for the squirrel and the dragon!

Meet at Peasholm Park Cafe, next to the pond - 21-23 Victoria Park, Scarborough, YO12 7TS

Sweet thoughts Day - Share your chocolate memories for National Chocolate week

Tues 9, Oct 10am to 5pm

Share your thoughts and memories of an industry York is famed for, as the city embraces this year's Chocolate Week.

York Stories 2012 is asking people of York to commemorate National Chocolate Week, with contributions of their own "Sweet Thoughts" of York's Chocolate and Confectionery Industry.

Your memories might be of your first job, the social life of the factories, the thousands of bicycles making their way through York when clocking off time came, the smell of chocolate across the city, or the special memories your favourite chocolate bar evokes every time you eat it.

The confectionery industry has played a major role in the shaping of modern York, this is a wonderful opportunity to collect and celebrate the industry that so many people have been involved in.

Residents of all ages with sweet memories and experiences are invited to visit York Cocoa House, Blake Street on Tuesday 9 Oct 10am to 5pm where they can share their stories, pictures and memories.

Come and meet members of staff, or the "artist in residence" who'll be capturing Sweet Thoughts during the day, and indulge in a little chocolate treat in return.

Sweet Thoughts Day is part of the York Stories 2012, York 800 community project which aims to encourage people to tell and share stories that are personal and unique to the city of York.

A York 800 Film Festival

Sat 14 and Sun 15 Sept

The festival opens on Friday with one of the most critically acclaimed and best-loved British documentaries, Night Mail (1936), featuring the poetry of York born W H Auden and music by Benjamin Britten. Our railway theme continues with Buster Keaton in the silent comedy classic, The General (1926). Live musical accompaniment will be provided by Kieran White as he performs an original score, specially composed for the event.

On the Saturday, the day’s programme begins with the family favourite, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (1971) and chocolate-themed events to celebrate York’s tradition of chocolate making.

The matinee film marks the contribution of another son of York, John Barry, to cinema by showing Goldfinger (1964), the James Bond film with one of his most memorable scores.

The final feature is Brassed Off (1996) which tells the story of a group of miners faced with the closure of their pit and united by a brass band. We are delighted to be joined by the film’s writer and director and York resident, Mark Herman, for a discussion after the screening.
