Are you taking the 'P'

Sun 17 June, starts at 9am from Rowntree Park

It's time for men get out their running shoes and raise money for charity.

The annual York prostate cancer fun run is looking for hundreds of runners, and walkers, willing to spend Father’s Day completing a scenic three miles in and around the city centre. The only criteria for taking part in the third R U Taking the P? run is to be male.

Sporting prowess is not necessary and entrants are welcome to run, jog, walk or use a wheelchair to cover the route. Already some men who have survived prostate cancer have signed up.

Joint organiser Brian Hughes, of York Knavesmire Harriers, said thousands of women turn out every year for the annual Race for Life in aid of breast cancer, but prostate cancer is barely spoken about, despite 37,000 new cases being diagnosed every year in the UK.

The race on Father’s Day, starts outside the main gates of Rowntree Park and takes the runners and walkers over the Millennium, Skeldergate and Blue Bridges, through Tower Gardens and St George’s Field, up to Clifford’s Tower and in two loops round Rowntree Park itself.

Entry forms are available from Brian Hair Fashions, 54 South Bank Avenue, and from Yorkshire Cancer Research’s website on yorkshirecancerresearch.org.uk

Time to enjoy the summer

Now that the weather has finally picked up why don't you have a look at some of the many outdoor activities our wonderful city has to offer:

Fri 8 June, 1pm to 2.30pm at Glen Gardens, Heworth
Join in the fun and games with an environmental theme. Learn more about the wildlife found in Glen Gardens though a session of games. How do bats find their food, how do butterflies scare off their predators and more.
Cost: Free

Help conserve our parks as well as having fun and getting some exercise in fabulous surroundings.

Mon 11 June, 1pm to 3pm in Rowntree Park
Himalayan Balsam is a very invasive plant and needs to be removed when found as it just takes over. It can grow up to 2 metres high, but due to its shallow root level can easily be pulled out with no effort at all. It suffocates all plants around it leaving areas bare and therefore open to erosion. It needs to be bashed before it flowers so the time to do this is limited. So come along to Rowntree Park and together we can eradicate this plant to make the park a better place.
Cost: Free

Thur 14 June, 10am to 2pm - This walk starts from outside the Black Horse Pub, 42-44 The Village, Wigginton
A pleasant four mile walk around Wigginton, followed by a one hour Green Gym session with TCV
http://www.tcv.org.uk/. After the walk, help us eradicate the invasive Himalayan Balsam in a wooded area of Wigginton to allow the return of native plant species. The work is slightly strenuous but it is quite a satisfying task with some of the plants over 6 foot high - however they are removed surprisingly easily and you can soon see the areas which have been cleared.
Please bring lunch and a drink, and wear shoes and clothes suitable for walking/working in the outdoors
Cost: Free

A bus service (number 1) is available every 10 minutes from the Theatre Royal to Wigginton.

Mon 18 June, 1pm to 3pm in West Bank Park
Why not try wildflower surveying – no experience required. Training will be given in surveying techniques and wildflower identification. Help record the wildflowers in this small meadow so that we can monitor how effective our management of the area is.
Cost: Free
