Save lives!

Energise is proud to offer the RLSS UK National Pool Lifeguard Qualification in connection with First Rescue. This course covers skills needed to become a lifeguard including aquatic rescues, first aid, CPR and health and safety knowledge. Upon successful completion candidates gain this nationally recognised lifeguard qualification that is valid for 2 years. Courses run 9am to 5pm over a 6 day period and cost £285.

Byland Abbey amble

Sat 11 June, 11am to 3pm, Walks starts from the Abbey Inn, Byland, Coxwold, York

Join the Active Living Officer for a beautiful walk around the countryside of Byland Abbey for a 6 mile walk along country tracks and woodland paths. The walk includes a few steep inclines and stiles. Toilets are available at the start of the walk and at the end. Please bring lunch as refreshments will not be available until after the walk in the local pub. A bus service is available from York Exhibition Square (Stephensons 31X) leaving at 10.15am arriving at Byland Abbey at 10.59am. Walk will not start until the bus arrives. Return for further information if required.
journey can either be 2.09pm or 4.16pm back to York. Bus fares may apply.

Ride into the past

Sun 12 June, meet at the Cycle Hub Station, Wellington Row, York at 10am

A gateway to history

Looking for your ancestors or interested local history? This introduction will help you to find and use archives in York and beyond.
This free session is suitable for anybody interested in finding out more about archives. We will talk about how to find them, how to use them and what sorts of information they contain, with the help of some examples from York’s own rich Archive.

A night of crime

Meet two writers who have between them penned thrillers set in the world of business and finance, historical adventure set in the Napoleonic wars, a trilogy set during the Crusades, crime novels linking past and present, and a series featuring an Icelandic detective. 'Bumps and Babies' Celebration Day

"Bumps, Babies, Children under five", are being invited to Explore York Library Learning Centre to celebrate being a child in York.
The children are being asked to bring their Mums, Dads, Grandparents and Carers with them to join in the fun! 
During the day there will be taster sessions for Baby Yoga, Baby Signing and much more. Including displays and information from the Library, The Children’s Centre, Family Learning, The Local History and Archives and City Screen plus a chance for the adults to discover how to enjoy their "Me Time"
There will be story and rhyme time sessions every ½ hour from 10am to 3.30pm.

Brilliant butterflies

Carnival time!

Sat 4 June 12noon to 8pm

Once again York will come to life with the sounds of the Carnival 2011 – and entertainment which will be out of this world!
Organised by students from University of York, this year there will be three main components of the day.   An Outerspace themed parade which runs through the streets of York; performances throughout the City Centre as well as the two stages; and free workshops to take part in. Also, look out for the street performers, inflatable games, the kids’ corner and creative drawing. Along Parliament Street there will be face painting, a treasure hunt, henna tattoos, a smoothie workshop and much more!

Sat 4 June 9.30am to 4.30pm
Working with industry professionals through First Light, learn how to make a short film in a day, themed around the Olympic and Paralympic Games. Learn about story, camera, sound, directing, editing and producing a short film. Run in partnership with Panasonic, Film Nation: Shorts will introduce young people to film-making, support them in developing their talent. Winning films will be screened in front of the crowds in venues during the Olympic and Paralympic Games in London in 2012.
