Fayre is fair

The York Festival of Fair-trade, 27 Feb to 11 Mar 2012

During the Festival there will be over a hundred events including sales, tastings and events at churches, schools, community groups and at the city's universities.

The highlight of the Festival will be the three day York Fair-trade Market, held in partnership with City of York Council, which will take place on Fri 9 to Sun 11 Mar.  Parliament St will be filled with a wide variety of colourful stalls selling Fair-trade food & drink, crafts, clothes, bags, jewellery and fashion accessories.

At the market on Sat 10 Mar there will be a day of entertainment including the infectious sound of samba, music and dancing from around the world.
Fair-trade ensures that producers in developing countries are paid a fair price for the goods that they produce.
Fair-trade groups, as well as guaranteeing a steady price, also pay producers a premium and establish long term trading relationships. This can save the producers from bankruptcy and homelessness and enables them to afford to send their children to school, buy medicines and contribute financially to community projects.
Fair-trade benefits some of the World's poorest countries. It offers a long term solution and a way out of poverty. York has a long and proud history of campaigning alongside the World's poor.  York is a Fairtrade City.
