Gruelling experiences

Sat 27 Apr, 2pm to 3pm at York Explore

For many, the word ‘workhouse’ conjures up images such as the orphan Oliver Twist begging for food from a cruel workhouse Overseer. The reality, however, was somewhat different, and Britain’s system of poor relief arguably saved thousands of people from starvation.

This lecture will look at the story of the workhouse in and around York, covering such topics as the evolution of the workhouse system, workhouse buildings, life inside the institution, and workhouse records.

Cost: £4
